Due to the machining differences between the two materials, 17-4PH is more suitable for high-speed milling with carbide tools, while 904L is recommended for low-speed, high-feed machining with cobalt-based alloy tools. 17-4PH is often used for joint components of precision medical equipment, while 904L is preferred for seawater corrosion-resistant structural parts of offshore platforms.

After aging, 17-4PH stainless steel parts can be CNC machined to a hardness of up to HRC40, making them particularly suitable for aviation fasteners requiring both corrosion resistance and high strength. Five-axis machining centers can maintain contour accuracy of 0.01mm on complex curved surfaces, meeting the aerodynamic requirements of turbine engine components. Feed rate control is essential during machining of this material to prevent abnormal tool wear due to work hardening.
